Anxiety can be a tricky thing to deal with, but it doesn’t have to be. Learning how to deal with anxiety attacks when they come up is just as important as learning how to prevent them.
I always talk about ways to get rid of your anxiety and prevent yourself from ever having it again, but it’s just as important to know how to deal with it when you do have it. I take care of my body every day now from the inside out and am really in tune with it, which is why I rarely ever have anxiety nowadays. However, I am human and there are still days in my life where anxiety comes up. The only difference now is that I know how to deal with it when it does come up, ensuring that it doesn’t stay for long.
Here are my top tips for staying calm during an anxiety attack:
- BREATHE. It might seem silly in the moment but really, this is the only thing that will help your anxiety attack end quicker. Take deep, slow breaths in and out and your anxiety will soon start to fade away
- Focus on a positive thought and let go of any bad thoughts. You are the only one in control of your thoughts. Close your eyes, focus on one positive thought, repeat it over and over again in your head, and watch every negative thought fade away. If it’s too hard for you to focus on a thought, focus on an action, like opening and closing your hands, counting your fingers, or tapping your fingers against something slowly.
- Reach for a glass of water. This one always helps me!
- Come to terms with what is happening to you and be okay with it. There is nothing wrong with you if you have a panic attack and you should never feel bad about it or be ashamed of yourself because of it. In fact, this will only make the situation worse! Tell yourself that it is only temporary and that it will go away soon. The sooner you’re okay with what is happening to you and the sooner you believe that it will go away, the sooner it will!
- Step outside and breathe fresh air. Being out in nature and breathing fresh air always helps you feel more calm. Focus on breathing while also focus on your surroundings. Notice the birds chirping, the trees blooming, or even the people walking by. Take your mind off of your thoughts by being present and focusing on your surroundings. If you’re in a car while this is happening, simply put down the windows and breathe.
This is what I personally do when having a panic attack or before I feel one coming on, and it always helps me. Hope these help you as well and comment below if you have any other suggestions!
Have a lovely day angels
